What is NoisedB ?

NoisedB is a publicly available database that contains noise levels of certified aeroplanes according to ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) standards and recommended practices or Code of Federal Regulation, Title 14, part 36.

NoisedB was developed, under the auspices of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), to respond to a need expressed by ICAO and ECAC (European Civil Aviation Conference) for an international database containing the noise levels certified by the authorities. Designed, developed and updated by the French General Directorate of Civil Aviation (DGAC), NoisedB is a source of information for aircraft control authorities, airport operators, local consultation bodies and constitutes a reference for the revision of certification standards.


Contents

The database contains the noise levels of aeroplanes certified according to ICAO regulations, Annex 16, Volume I, Chapters 2, 3, 4 and 14 or according to 14 CFR part 36, Stage 3, Stage 4 and Stage 5. A set of characteristics is mention, among which the maximum take-off weight, the version, the type of engine and, if appropriate, the modifications specific to each aircraft. The data is available as an individual sheet or as a spreadsheet of several aircraft.

NOTE : This database does not supersede the official information contained in the noise certificate issued by the State of Registry.


Update procedure

The procedure includes the following steps:

  • The DGAC requests the new data from the certification authorities;
  • The authority refers to its manufacturers, who, on a voluntary basis, provide the new information as appropriate;
  • The authority approves the data and forwards them to the DGAC;
  • The DGAC, in its role of maintaining the database, checks the integrity of the information provided;
  • The DGAC presents to the Aircraft Noise - Working Group of the ICAO Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP) the updated database for approval;
  • The working group verifies the coherence of the data format (e.g. consistency in the format of aeroplane and engine designations);
  • The revised version of the database is published on the ICAO website.

NOTE 1. It is the responsibility of the State of Design to verify the correctness of the data communicated to the DGAC.

NOTE 2. The authority follows its internal updating procedure. The provision of information depends on the resources allocated to that task.

NOTE 3. The database is updated at plenary meetings of the Aircraft Noise Working Group of the ICAO Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP)

Certified aircraft noise data is updated in NoiseDB through a process involving several steps: data is requested by DGAC from certification authorities, then provided by manufacturers, validated or rejected by the authority, and finally integrated into NoiseDB after final approval. Rejected data is reviewed and may be modified before resubmission. Each update is published after validation by the ICAO working group.

NOTE The stringency of the standards follows the evolution of technological progress. For example, Chapter 14 requires lower noise levels than Chapter 4.


The noise certification levels are determined on ground level during the flight tests certification procedure for reference conditions at the following measurement points:

An approach point located at a distance of 2000 meters from the runway threshold to the landing
Lateral
(takeoff at maximum power)
Two lateral points located at 450(*) meters on each side of the centreline of the runway where the take-off noise level is maximum. The certified noise level is the average of the noise levels observed at these two measurement points.
(*) 650 meters for Chapter 2
Flyover
(Takeoff after power reduction)
A flyover point located on the centerline of the runway at a distance of 6500 meters from the brake release.
